LONDON: Sunderland Chief Executive Margaret Byrne has surrendered over her part in the choice to permit Adam Johnson to keep playing for the group regardless of admitting to kissing a 15-year-old schoolgirl, the English Premier League club said on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old England universal was sacked by Sunderland a month ago in the wake of confessing to two youngster sex offenses. He was sentenced week for sexual movement with a kid and now confronts up to 10 years in jail.
"The Board of Sunderland AFC has today acknowledged the abdication of Margaret Byrne," the club said in an announcement.
"Margaret, in her part as CEO, was in charge of the running of the club. She was likewise responsible for the moves made by the club in connection to Mr Johnson," Sunderland said.
